What is a music video?
Definition: A videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.
Usually music video clips are not simple, they are usually very stylised and use different camera and editing techniques from conventional TV shows which we are used to seeing. Music videos these days have become a big part of the music industry and play a huge role in the success of an artist and his sales of albums and singles.
What is the purpose of a music video?
Any music video's main purpose is to promote the single, but they also have many other purposes such as promote the actual artist as well. Some of other purposes:
- Make the audience remember the song from the video
- Present the song not only audibly, but also visually for the viewer to get a better understanding of the song
- Entertain viewers by showing artists dance and sing
- Attract a wider audience
- Sell not only the single, but also merchandise
The main point is, that a music video is a marketing tool which is used to visually present the song to the audience which helps sell the artist, their brand and their products such as gigs, albums and singles to as wide an audience as possible.
This is a music video I found which in my opinion has the purposes of a music video:
In my opinion this music video helps the audience remember the song because it illustrates the lyrics. At the same time it also helps the viewer understand the song better and get the deeper ideas behind it. It also entertains by showing the whole band performing the song which can be seen from 0:30 into the video. I think it also tries to attract a wider audience, usually rock is more of a man's genre, but by showing the woman in the video it may also make the song be more suitable for women.
